How To Lose Weight and Keep It Off Forever
August 20, 2007 – 12:51 amStatistics show that obesity is on the rise and is fast topping the list of health problems everywhere. Most people find it a real struggle to maintain a healthy weight even though they are aware that obesity is the prime cause of a number of serious health problems including heart disease, diabetes, high cholesterol, strokes and joint problems. Sometimes it’s just a matter of maintaining a healthy weight to cure yourself of certain medical problems.
How do you lay a foundation for good health? Regular eating right and exercise are the two most essential requisites to losing weight and maintaining a healthy weight, with emphasis on the word regular. You have to exercise regularly and eat right on a regular basis to gain any permanent health benefits. If you keep following different fad diets at random without making any permanent and significant lifestyle changes, you would end up gaining all the weight that you had lost while dieting. In fact you would find to your utter dismay that you have put on more weight than you had lost.
Studies show that this going on and off diets, also called yo-yo dieting poses an even greater health problem than being overweight and it can have its own side effects. The ideal diet plan is one that you can follow faithfully for life. Inability to do so spells certain failure.
In an effort towards maintaining a healthy weight it is preferable to make small changes over a period of time rather than making a huge radial change overnight. If you’ve been a couch potato all your life don’t try getting off it and running 10 miles the next day. Instead start small and increase the duration and intensity over a period of time. You could start by taking a small walk three times a week. Even a simple brisk walk around the block can go a long way towards improving your health and fitness. Moderate exercise done regularly speeds up your metabolism and makes it easier for you to maintain a healthy weight.
Along with losing fat, regular exercise also helps to build muscle. This extra muscle tissue in turn helps you to lose that additional weight. Another great plus point is the fact that you feel better as your weight decreases and your overall health improves. You do not have to resort to a rigorous exercise regimen to get positive results. A simple walk taken regularly several times as week can be just as effective.
Along with exercise for maintaining a healthy weight, equally important is a well balanced diet including lots of vegetables and fruit. Indulging in the wrong kinds of foods that are high in fat and sugar provides extra calories and can have a negative impact on your weight loss regime. It is extremely difficult to follow a healthy diet if it means eating only vegetables, fruits and other low calorie foods and altogether avoiding the foods you love which could be high calorie. In order to follow a healthy diet for life you should choose low calories foods that you like so maintaining a healthy diet becomes an enjoyable habit and not a torture. Indulging in the occasional treat helps fend off those cravings that will eventually lead you to over-indulge in high calorie desserts.
